I Won!

Ever since joining the blogging community at the beginning of this year, I have 'met' some really wonderful, amazing people.  The blogging community offers a wealth of information because we share from our hearts and our experiences.  I have learned so many new things about homesteading and photography; I have had many a good laugh, shed some tears, been blessed and encouraged, said some prayers; and I've won some give-aways!

This morning, I found out that I won some raw honey with the honeycomb from Lynnie at Invited to the Kings Table!  I am SO excited because I absolutely LOVE raw honey.  Here is a photo from her blog...

ME!   Isn't it gorgeous!

Country Boy and I will eventually get some honeybees as we develop our hobby farm.  I can't wait!  Meanwhile, I'm going to enjoy some raw honey from Lynnie's bees!  Thanks Lynnie!

Don't Mess With Me

I've read several blogs lately that have talked about an unruly rooster they had and how it ended up on the dinner table!  Well, I thought I'd tell ya' about a rooster we had back when we had chickens *sigh* (oh, to have chickens again... someday!).

Country Boy and I had over forty chickens at one time because we were having difficulty keeping up with the demand for our girls' eggs!  Every time we picked out our chicks at the local feed store, we chose ones that were supposedly sexed and were supposed to be hens.  Needless to say, we ended up with a couple of roosters.  We separated them and they each had over twenty girls of their own so all was well in their world.  When the last rooster we ended up with, Ozzie, got a little older, he became very possessive of his girls.

Ozzie, Rhode Island Red Rooster

I never had any problem with him but a couple of my neighbors, who would spoil them and bring over kitchen treats (scraps) for them to munch on, informed me that Ozzie had 'come after them'.  I was a little shocked because I hadn't seen any aggressive behavior.... yet!  Then one day, as I went into the chicken run to give them some kitchen treats, Ozzie started after me.  He never finished his 'attack' because I quickly handed out the rest of the treats and then it was ON!  I chased after him in the chicken run (which was a sight to see I'm sure!) until I managed to corner him.  I'm sure he thought I'd gone mad!  I scooped him up, looked him in the eye and gave him the what fers!  I proceeded to scold him and tell him that he should NOT mess with the hands that feed him.  After all, I AM the Mama and what I say G O E S !!!  From that day on, he never messed with me again!  He kept his eye on me but he kept his distance too!  Smart rooster!

True story!

What funny chicken stories do you have?

Homesteading Efforts

For several years, Country Boy and I spent a weeks vacation going on mission trips to the jungles of Honduras and Nicaragua to help the locals build a church for their village.  We loved it!  We enjoyed every minute of the nine hour ride (to go 20 miles or so!) sitting on five gallon buckets (or whatever you could find!) on the back of a flatbed truck!  We enjoyed bathing in the river, sleeping on army cots in tents, getting our drinking water from the river (upstream from where you bathe, of course!)  I digress though... what pure joy it was to work alongside the locals, language barrier and all, and help them build a church that they could worship in.  These villagers had no electricity and several generations lived in a house about the size of a large shed here in the States.  They were happy!  Such a simple lifestyle where everyone pitched in and looked out for each other.

Country Boy and I have a deep desire to get back to a simpler lifestyle.  While neither one of us would be able to talk intelligently about the economic situation of our government we have a 'gut' feeling that things are not good nor will they be any better any time soon.  We feel it is our responsibility to take care of ourselves and our families rather than relying on and waiting for the government to fix what is wrong or to take care of us.  We have a strong desire to become more self-sufficient and less reliant on things such as store-bought food, fuel resources, electricity, etc.  We want to grow our own food, conserve energy, be debt-free and live with less.

While we have a L-O-N-G way to go, we have started making some small efforts here and there.  I decided to make a list of some of the changes we have incorporated into our daily lives throughout this year because I was beginning to feel as though we haven't done anything towards meeting our goal and I thought a list would help reinforce our efforts and give me confirmation that we are headed in the right direction.

So, here's our list:

1.  I purchased a 50' retractable clothesline that I use to hang the laundry on to dry.  I LOVE laundry days now!  And, our electric bill has been greatly reduced!  The only load I dry are the towels (I like my towels soft!)

2.  I purchased a $9.00 glass jar with a lid to use in the kitchen for food scraps.  Since we don't have chickens anymore, all food scraps go into the jar.  Once the jar is full, I take it out to the compost bin.

3.  Our old bathtub was repurposed into a compost bin.

4.  We planted a vegetable garden although our crops were not great this year due to wild animals eating the plants and our sandy soil.

5.  We gather rain water in empty kitty litter buckets to use to water the plants.
6.  We are using more 'green' and homemade cleaning products rather than heavily chemical-laden products.
7.  I go to town once a week and do all my errands, grocery shopping, etc. that day.
8.  We are eating out less and eating more home-cooked meals with seasonal vegetables.  YUM!  Much easier on the wallet too and better for your health!
9.  We are reducing our monthly bills.  We disconnected our satellite service.  Paying a monthly fee to watch only a few channels was not worth the expense.  By going to town once a week, we've reduced our gas bill.
10.  I have learned to distinguish between wants and needs.  When I used to go to the local superstore I was tempted by all the wonderful 'things' that were on display.  I was always able to rationalize why I needed a particular item that wasn't on my original shopping list!  Now, when I go to the superstore, I can walk past it and not think twice about it because it doesn't have a purpose in my ultimate homesteading goal.
11.  I am going through the house and cleaning out the clutter and the items that are just taking up space and get no use.  I've donated items, listed other items on ebay and tossed other items.  What doesn't sell on ebay will eventually get donated.

It's not a very long list, but, by making a few small changes here and there, we've noticed differences in our electric bill, gas bill, health, etc.  It's also a very satisfying and rewarding way to live knowing you're making a difference and striving to become self-sufficient.  We are enjoying this homesteading journey and are excited about what's in store for our future!

Sunday Series 52: Week 2

I am linking up with A Rural Journal for her weekly photo challenge.  This week's subject was mail.  I decided to show you what I usually see when I open up the mailbox!

Texture used was PDPA Vintage Blues 1
Layer mode is on Lighten at 80%
Background layer was sharpened

Thankfully, there were no bills!  I enjoy going to the mailbox every day.  It's a bit of a walk from the house and there's always something to see along the way.  I also enjoy the anticipation of what's going to be inside the mailbox!  Usually, it's a lot of junk mail, sometimes a magazine or catalogue and a bill every now and then *sigh*.  With all the technology we have today, people rarely send or receive hand written letters or cards.  I'm guilty.  I think we're missing out on something here because I don't think I'm the only one that looks forward to seeing what's inside the mailbox and secretly hoping for that little something personal from a friend or family member.  Wouldn't that be nice?  I need to make an effort to send a note or card more often and not just on birthdays!

Stop by A Rural Journal and see the creativity of other photographers!

Big Project

This morning Country Boy decided to  tackle a big project that he has been putting off for a while... fixing the front porch so that it doesn't leak anymore when it rains.  It was more than a matter of finding the leak and patching it.  After seven years since we built the porch, both the house and the porch have settled a bit and it left the front corner of the porch higher than the back corner which is attached to the house.  After coming up with a plan, we went for it!  I removed all the furniture that was on that side of the porch and Country Boy started taking that whole end of the porch apart... screen, railings, ceiling, etc.  What a mess!

While he was tearing things up, I wiped down all the furniture, washed the curtains that hung out there and decided to re-grout my mosaic table I made a couple of years ago.

The grout was dirty and had sunk in over time.  This was my second mosaic project (and last so far!) that I've done and I think I washed the grout off the glass pieces too early and that's why the grout sunk.  Live and learn!  So, it was time to re-do it!

Here's midway through the re-grouting...

I left it sitting for a few minutes then I started wiping the excess off.  Again, I noticed that it was cracking and caving in.  So, I put a bit of water on a sponge and used both the sponge and my fingers to smooth the grout and then I left it sit for about 15 minutes before wiping again.  This time, it seemed to have set so I was able to continue wiping the grout off the glass and still have a smooth grout line.

It's all done but is drying some more on the back porch...

Much better!

In case you've forgotten how dirty it was before............................................after!

I also painted the ceiling with Kilz to cover up the water stain.  Once that dries, I'll paint it the ceiling color which is a pale yellow.

Country Boy did his thing and managed to get it all back together for the most part.  Once the ceiling boards are painted he'll hang them back up.  He also wants to re-work the rafters a bit and leave them exposed.  Just a few minor things are left to do and then we'll wait for our next rain and pray that all that work solved the problem!

Since I'm hoping for porch weather soon, I'm going to do some Autumn cleaning on the porch once Country Boy is finished.  Autumn cleaning involves washing the front door (possibly painting it) and siding, putting teak oil on the furniture and stain/sealing the floor.  Maybe when all that gets done it will be cool enough to sit out there and enjoy a tall, cold glass of raspberry iced tea with my man!

I hope y'all are having a great weekend!

WooHoo It's Friday!

Oh what am I talking about... everyday is Friday for me!  But, for those of you who don't have a Friday everyday... Happy Friday y'all!  It's a slightly cool, breezy morning here in Central Florida which is fantastic for this time of year!  I've been up and at 'em already this morning... the sheets have been washed and hung on the line to dry, supper is in the CrockPot, more photos taken AND all before I've finished my morning coffee!  Whew!  No worries though... I drink decaf!  Country Boy wonders why I even bother but that's another story!

I still need to run to town to do some errands and get a few groceries.  Lots of little stuff on the To-Do list today.  Unfortunately, none of it is exciting enough to share but must be done *sigh*.

Yesterday evening as I went outside to give the kitties their supper snack, I took my camera with me (something I am trying to get in the habit of doing every time I walk out the door... as Country Boy says, "You need to wear that camera like a pair of shoes."  Maybe he's tired of me griping about missing a shot because I didn't have my camera... hmmmm, ya' think?!).

Anyway, I noticed that our back porch and stairs were trashed with acorn bits.  I've heard them falling on the tin roof all day.  Apparently, Scrappy Squirrel likes to sit in the tree above the back porch eating acorns and discarding his trash on our stairs which bounce off onto the back porch!  This acorn, though, was on the deck, unscathed...

This morning when I went outside to give the kitties their breakfast...

... blown to smithereens!  Must've been yummy!  I'm sure today will be a repeat of yesterday with all the noise of more acorns hitting the tin roof!  The good thing... with the squirrels eating acorns, I shouldn't have to put so much corn & peanuts out for them now.  We'll see... after all, they are pigs!

I'd better get back at 'em!

I hope y'all have a fabulous weekend!

A Momentous Occasion

I have finally reached 50 Followers as of today!  Woohoo!  A HUGE thank you to all who have signed up to follow me, for those of you who faithfully read my blog whenever I publish a post and especially to those of you who take a few minutes to make a comment!  I enjoy reading each and every one; some make me laugh, some make me stop and think and others I learn from.  Thanks again for becoming a part of my country/cyberspace world!

We had a brief shower this afternoon, and I mean brief!  But, I will never complain about any rain that we receive and am always thankful because I know of several places that haven't had any rain in months.  When the rain ended, the sun came out so I ventured outside with my camera to see what was going on in my yard!  I didn't even make it off the front steps when I spotted this beauty staring at me!

I guess I started getting a little too close so he scampered over to another part of the plant...

Then, he started bouncing up and down so I knew what was coming next...

I'm not sure what that means but I decided to leave him alone since he was trying to get a drink from the water on the leaves.  Thanks for posing Mr. Lizard!

Thanks for stopping by; y'all are awesome!

The Fruit of Our Labor

Country Boy and I woke up to foggy, overcast skies.  As we drank our coffee on the front porch, we chatted about our desires for our future while watching the hummingbirds buzz around and drink from the feeder.  Since we weren't sure what the weather was going to do today, we decided it was a good day to make some jelly!

What started out as this...

...ended up as this...

Four pints of yummy possum grape jelly!  Mmmm!  Toast & jelly anyone!

The Moment You've All Been Waiting For...

OK, maybe not ALL of you have been waiting but, I know I sure have looked forward to this moment *huge smile*... the floor project is done!

Here are some before photos...

Your typical sheet of linoleum.  It was fine when we first moved in but over time scuff marks began to show from the dining chairs and this started happening a year or so ago...

it shrank and started curling up.  How do you like Hunter's squeaky mouse!  Also, take note of the white piece in the lower right corner of the above photo.  This is a door jamb.

After being a box short and then adding another project to the original project (which Country Boy and I are well-known for!) here's the finished project...

Such a huge difference!  I like how these vinyl tiles look like ceramic!

No more peeling linoleum!  AND, no more white, vinyl covered pressboard in the door jambs that were swollen at the bottoms!  We purchased some pine boards and I stained them to match the existing baseboards and trim.  That change has made a huge difference in the look of the doorway from the family room into the kitchen.  We also did the same thing in the doorway in the laundry room that leads to the backyard.  We took the old, cheap stuff out and put in painted white pine boards.

The other project we also tackled at the same time was finally adding some trim at the ceiling in our living room.  My sister helped me hang paintable wallpaper two years ago but because our ceiling is slanted, we weren't sure how to install crown molding so, it was left unfinished.  Our solution... we purchased 2"x1/4" pieces of pine and I stained them to match the baseboards and trim.  I did not get a before photo but, here's the finished look...

Just by adding these pieces, the look of the entire family room changed and now it too is finished!

Woot!  Country Boy did an awesome job and we're both glad that those projects are done!

Hmmm, what's next.... the back porch.  Major project there but that will have to wait until it cools down a bit before we tackle that!

Thanks for stopping by and taking an interest in what's happening in our neck of the woods!

Where Did The Day Go?

I spent part of the day running errands and having lunch with a neighbor.  Then the rest of the day was spent photographing and listing my many stamp sets on ebay.  I received some good suggestions from y'all on shooting the stamps.  Here's one of the final photos...

I shot in aperture mode on a tripod with an f-stop of 14.  Thanks for the tips!  I learned something new!

This evening I grabbed my camera as I went out to give the kitties their supper snack.  After they gobbled it up, I walked up the drive towards the front yard and came across our non-skiddish rabbit again.

Precious was casually following me until she spotted Peter Cottontail.  What followed would've best been seen by video but since I don't know how to use that feature on my camera I'll have to tell you what she was doing... First of all, she was so loud and noisy that she wouldn't have been able to sneak up on the rabbit if she wanted to!  Several deep-throated, long meows came forth and she started hunkering down to the ground and running and getting really excited!  The more excited she got looking at the rabbit, the louder she got!

She finally laid down but she was still meowing!  Her tail is a blur because it's going a mile-a-minute!  All I could do was laugh because even with all the racket Precious was making the rabbit could've cared less!  Sometimes I wonder if it's the same rabbit that I rescued after Hunter brought it into the house early one morning.  Maybe it 'knows' me!

I hope y'all had a great Monday!  Lots of kiddos back in school this week; lots of people getting into a routine again for the school year!  Good luck!
