Big Project

This morning Country Boy decided to  tackle a big project that he has been putting off for a while... fixing the front porch so that it doesn't leak anymore when it rains.  It was more than a matter of finding the leak and patching it.  After seven years since we built the porch, both the house and the porch have settled a bit and it left the front corner of the porch higher than the back corner which is attached to the house.  After coming up with a plan, we went for it!  I removed all the furniture that was on that side of the porch and Country Boy started taking that whole end of the porch apart... screen, railings, ceiling, etc.  What a mess!

While he was tearing things up, I wiped down all the furniture, washed the curtains that hung out there and decided to re-grout my mosaic table I made a couple of years ago.

The grout was dirty and had sunk in over time.  This was my second mosaic project (and last so far!) that I've done and I think I washed the grout off the glass pieces too early and that's why the grout sunk.  Live and learn!  So, it was time to re-do it!

Here's midway through the re-grouting...

I left it sitting for a few minutes then I started wiping the excess off.  Again, I noticed that it was cracking and caving in.  So, I put a bit of water on a sponge and used both the sponge and my fingers to smooth the grout and then I left it sit for about 15 minutes before wiping again.  This time, it seemed to have set so I was able to continue wiping the grout off the glass and still have a smooth grout line.

It's all done but is drying some more on the back porch...

Much better!

In case you've forgotten how dirty it was before............................................after!

I also painted the ceiling with Kilz to cover up the water stain.  Once that dries, I'll paint it the ceiling color which is a pale yellow.

Country Boy did his thing and managed to get it all back together for the most part.  Once the ceiling boards are painted he'll hang them back up.  He also wants to re-work the rafters a bit and leave them exposed.  Just a few minor things are left to do and then we'll wait for our next rain and pray that all that work solved the problem!

Since I'm hoping for porch weather soon, I'm going to do some Autumn cleaning on the porch once Country Boy is finished.  Autumn cleaning involves washing the front door (possibly painting it) and siding, putting teak oil on the furniture and stain/sealing the floor.  Maybe when all that gets done it will be cool enough to sit out there and enjoy a tall, cold glass of raspberry iced tea with my man!

I hope y'all are having a great weekend!

Till next time,

Is it true? The saying, "no rest for the wicked!" Just kidding. Your father-in-saw used to have that much energy when he was your age but not your speed. You two make a great team!

sounds like you've got the right inspiration to get all this done. :)

That's a good effort. Now it just needs a little pot of flower on top of it ...

Looks like a busy day! Hope your roof is fixed. Leaks can be tricky and frustrating.
