Indian Falls and Amish Country in Randolph

Towards the end of my stay in New York, we took a drive over to Randolph in Western, NY to drive through Amish Country.  My sister tagged along with us this time and it made for some nice family time.

Lately, I have become fascinated with the Amish lifestyle and their commitment to their beliefs and to God, their simple (plain) lifestyle and their work-ethic.  I wanted to visit an Amish community while in NY since I've never been around one so big brother kindly took me.

I had always heard that the Amish kept their places neat and tidy and looking good so I was a little shocked at the condition of some of the farm houses and barns.

Horse and buggy ready to go
It's possible that they could have been prepping the house to be painted and it does look like they're possibly adding the Dawdi (grandparents) house behind the main house as is common practice among the Amish in the above photo.

Lots of milk jugs
 A beautiful farmhouse...

There were lots of schoolhouses in this area.  The school children were looking out the windows so I had to take a picture of the front of the building as the Amish do not like photos to be taken of themselves as they believe those images to be graven images and goes against biblical teachings.

Thus, a photo of the rear of the horse and buggy rather than the front...

Amish school playground...

From there we headed over to see Indian Falls and to get a bite at Indian Falls Log Cabin restaurant.

We sat in the enclosed deck (far right) that overlooked the falls.

While waiting for our food, I experimented with several different camera settings.  I like the milky effect of the falls in the following photo (soft & smooth)...

Country Boy prefers it this way (rough & tumble)...

Which do you prefer?

I wasn't that hungry so I just had a delicious bowl of French Onion soup.  Everyone else said their meal was good too.  After stuffing ourselves, we settled in for the drive home.  It was a great day!

Till next time,

Oh, I *love* the first of the photos. Gorgeous :)

When we were in PA four years ago, in Amish country, everything was *so* well kept. Their homes, barns, outhouses, fields were *immaculate*. And their houses were *huge*! (to us Brits anyway).

Loving these photos....I love to 'journey' with folks who've been on travels :)

Love it! And love that YOU are respectful of their beliefs regarding photos of themselves! :)

We have an Amish community near us as well.
We also have had a number of Amish men work for and with us. They are a tight kmit group and very much take their beliefs seriously. I'm not sure if this was the caae in your commumity..... But sometimes the paimt fades amd as away to not dtaw attemtion to themselves, boast or be prideful....they leave the houses and barms as is.
And let's be honest. Nothing draws attention to a home more than a bright and shiny new coat of paint. Even if it is white.
I love that you didn't take advantage of them by respecting their privacy in regard to photos!
XO
