I've read several blogs lately that have talked about an unruly rooster they had and how it ended up on the dinner table! Well, I thought I'd tell ya' about a rooster we had back when we had chickens *sigh* (oh, to have chickens again... someday!).
Country Boy and I had over forty chickens at one time because we were having difficulty keeping up with the demand for our girls' eggs! Every time we picked out our chicks at the local feed store, we chose ones that were supposedly sexed and were supposed to be hens. Needless to say, we ended up with a couple of roosters. We separated them and they each had over twenty girls of their own so all was well in their world. When the last rooster we ended up with, Ozzie, got a little older, he became very possessive of his girls.

I never had any problem with him but a couple of my neighbors, who would spoil them and bring over kitchen treats (scraps) for them to munch on, informed me that Ozzie had 'come after them'. I was a little shocked because I hadn't seen any aggressive behavior.... yet! Then one day, as I went into the chicken run to give them some kitchen treats, Ozzie started after me. He never finished his 'attack' because I quickly handed out the rest of the treats and then it was ON! I chased after him in the chicken run (which was a sight to see I'm sure!) until I managed to corner him. I'm sure he thought I'd gone mad! I scooped him up, looked him in the eye and gave him the what fers! I proceeded to scold him and tell him that he should NOT mess with the hands that feed him. After all, I AM the Mama and what I say G O E S !!! From that day on, he never messed with me again! He kept his eye on me but he kept his distance too! Smart rooster!
