Fresh Herbs

If you're like me, you have tons of dried herbs and spices in your pantry or in a cupboard near the stove.  I have so many spices that it takes up an entire, small upper cabinet near my stove.  By looking at them you'd think I was a gourmet chef!

In my quest to simplify our life and get back to the basics, I'm trying something new by growing my own herbs.  I've started with chives, dill, parsley and basil.  The chives and dill are slowly coming along, the parsley is taking its sweet time but the basil is looking good!

It has a nice, strong smell and is very flavorful.

I need to learn the proper way of when and how to pick the leaves and one day I'd also like to try drying some.

Maybe some day I'll be able to reclaim that cabinet space by having fewer dried spices that take up so much room and will have more fresh herbs to use in my cooking!

Have you ever grown any fresh herbs?

Till next time,

I just picked Rosemary for soup today as a matter of fact! The bush is huge and with our mild winter it still looks beautiful. I plant basil and parsley in the garden and have two types of thyme in a half barrel. Also my G-Mom-B's spearmint on the side of the house. I did learn to dry it in the microwave last year, you can find it under my Recipes Page if interested. Have fun:@)

I grow an assortment. Most of my lavendar died in last year's drought, but the other herbs seemed to love the hot, hot weather. I have some Thai Basil on the patio that survived the winter. My 'regular' basil (like yours) dies as soon as it hears temperatures will be in the low 30's (happens every autumn) so I am surprised that the Thai basil is going so strong. (I should tell you I still have lots to learn about gardening.) Rosemary, thyme, sage, marjoram or greek oregano (can't remember which it is), chives and parsley (oops! the parsley is dead... I'll have to get some more). One of my favorites is cilantro - I love it, reminds me of everything good about Tex-Mex cooking. I plant the seeds every few weeks and try to keep some going until the summer heat makes it bolt. Sorry to ramble on, I've been weeding and planting onions today and I'm too sore to get up and do housework... Happy Gardening!

I can't wait to plant some herbs again real soon! It's been so warm that I might get to plant them sooner than later! :)

I plant them between my other viggies just so when I am working I can smell them and some push away bad bugs!

I found your blog through Kristin's at Sweet Country Life.

I love growing herbs and last year devoted part of my front flower bed to herbs.

I grow Dill, Italian Basil, Lemon Basil, Tarragon, Oregano, Parsley, Peppermint and Cilantro.

Last year I used my dehydrator to dry them and have enjoyed them all winter long.
